Trauma and the Body
Sometimes people will experience something that their mind finds difficult to make sense of. When we experience this in everyday life, we will sometimes loose sleep thinking about it, or we find ourselves talking to our friends and family trying to make sense of what happened.
If an event is one that evokes a survival response from the body AND our minds find it difficult to make sense of, the brain stores this information in unique way that is designed to keep us safe in the future. This is why we can sometimes experience feelings in our body like sweating, breathing difficulties and stomach upset, and not really understand why our body responds this way. These symptoms can have medical explanations, but can also be an indication that there is a memory stored in our brains for body response, but this memory may not be in our awareness because the mind has not yet made sense of it.
Psychotherapy can work to move these kinds of memories from the subconscious to the conscious to allow our 'grown up' minds to make sense of the experience. See Bessel Van Der Kolk's book The Body Keeps The Score for more information on this topic.
